Many people wonder how a home lift can stop accurately at every floor without going too high or too low.
The answer is actually quite simple — it relies on a device called a limit switch together with the lift’s PLC control system.
A limit switch works like a normal electrical switch. Under normal conditions, the circuit is open. In electrical systems, this is called a Normally Open (NO) connection.
When the lift cabin reaches a specific floor, it touches or triggers the limit switch installed at that floor. Once triggered, the circuit becomes closed and sends a signal to the control system.
This signal is then received by the PLC (Programmable Logic Controller).
You can think of the PLC as the “brain” of the lift. It constantly receives and processes signals from different parts of the system.
For example, when the first-floor limit switch is activated, the PLC immediately understands that the cabin has arrived at the first floor. It then sends a command to stop the motor, allowing the lift cabin to stop precisely at the correct floor level.
Each floor has its own dedicated limit switch.
Because of this, the lift can stop accurately and smoothly at every floor.
Although the principle is simple, it is a very reliable and widely used solution in lift systems and many other industrial machines.
